We knew we didn't want anything big or extravagant, and I was up for any DIY projects, so what was one more? Most everyone we know tried to talk me out of it, Momma HS, MIL MS, friends, BMs, everyone. But once I set my mind to it, no one was going to stop me!
I went down to the store, bought a cake mix, looked around for pre-made fondant, and anything else I could think that I may need to make this cake. My first try at the cake was a major fail. I don't even have a picture of it because I ended up just eating it as I was trying to get it out of the pan! It just crumbled and broke and was a horrible mess. So I went back to the store, bought a different brand of cake mix, and tried again. This time, success!
Because I am a horrible blogger, I forgot to take pictures of the process! I figured I would just do a trial cake for the time being, but it turned out so good that I froze it and used it at our wedding!
I made 2 square cakes, one smaller then the other. I froze those, and once they were hard, I shaved and shaped them. The next step was to butter cream frost all around them. The base layer was covered in the fondant first (which actually rolled out really easy and smooth), then I added the top layer with a little frosting in between and put the fondant over the whole thing. This was the tricky part. Cutting the fondant around the top layer, making it fit it, and not cutting the bottom layer at all. But I did it! My lines weren't the straightest, but that was ok because I put a black ribbon around the bottom of the layers. And do you remember those flowers I used for the girls' hair? Well, I had some left, so I hot glued them to pins, and stuck them on the cake! And there it was, our wedding cake!

The project that everyone thought would be so hard and that I shouldn't do, was actually super easy! I wouldn't say I was a cake genious or anything, but I think I did a pretty good job, and it served its purpose well.
